This painting was created as a part of my “Memoirs” collection which was for my first interstate solo exhibition at THE KO Creative Studio in Geelong. These pieces were created over the winter and spring of 2019 as the landscape slowly changed from begging to end of the process.
This collection of artwork features beautifully painted Australian native flora. Each artwork depicts a point in time while out exploring in nature which holds memories of joy and peace.
I closely observed the delicate details of a collection of banksias, gum trees, golden wattles, sturt desert pea and flannel flowers, revealing their form and connection to ourselves. With both the most delicate of aspects and strong, bold features working harmoniously together. I have chosen to represent the pure simplicity of those moments by the use of colour and composition, with a focus on earthy colour palettes and a humble layout of the plants structure. Half the artwork have a more realistic style to clearly depict the plants finer details and beauty, while the other half have a focus on the overall structure and colour palette with block sections and strong lines. The backgrounds are gently expressive and flow harmoniously to signify the sense of freedom and space in the Australian bushlands adding to the serenity of those moments. I have allowed the plants structure to be free flowing in its natural state as it would be found when walking up to observe from a closer perspective.
This collection of Australian natives will fill their new homes with the peaceful and joyful memoirs that were captured while out exploring in the Australian bushlands. These artwork remind us to take in those quiet moments with nature while escaping the everyday. Slow, mindful and grounding moments made permanent through art.
